Philadelphia Flower Show-2011 Inspiration

I can’t believe it is almost August which means we need to get into full mode to begin designing our Flower Show Display. This year we are honored that we were moved to a larger space and are now in the Invitational Floral Category.

When thinking about our inspiration for next year’s display I went back to my fashion background. Having grown up in Europe and traveled extensively, I have always loved the chic yet classic fashions of Chanel. Our exhibit will be inspired by the timelessness of Coco Chanel and her designs.

This exerpt is from Wikipedia…

The Coco Chanel era

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel heralded new designs and revolutionized the fashion industry by going “back to basics”, incorporating elegance, class, and originality. Under her tight reign from 1909–1971, Coco Chanel held the title as ‘Chief Designer’ until her death on January 10, 1971.

I love the clean lines of the logo and the gift box. The white gardenia accent on the box is the piece de resistance!

Chanel Sycomore
The Black and White is so clean but looks just as great when mixed with a hint of ivory.

All of these images were found on flicker.
The black looks equally lovely when paired with light pink.   We will be deciding the exact color palette we will head towards very very soon.
Another color combo that is beautiful is the black and soft yellow.
Stay tuned for more inspiration posts!

Talking 2011 With Beautiful Blooms’ Donna O’Brien

July 12, 2010 by Beverly

*I took this off of the flower show blog

Even though 2010’s Philadelphia International Flower Show took place just a few months ago, the show’s organizers and exhibitors are already at work on 2011’s show. One such exhibitor is Beautiful Blooms owner Donna O’Brien. Anyone who attended 2010’s show surely remembers Beautiful Blooms’ innovative hanging “Global Terrain,” which snagged the Award of Excellence. Donna says she was happy with the end result of the buzzed-about display, but plans to change it up for 2011, keeping her design fresh and modern.

Donna will draw on her knowledge of the fashion industry as a starting point for next year’s “Springtime in Paris” theme. Before starting Beautiful Blooms, Donna graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked for Seventeen magazine, Esprit, and Liz Claiborne. Her time in the industry honored her eye for mixing textures and colors, which will surely come into play next year, as Donna plans to include Chanel-inspired color blocking in the 2011 Beautiful Blooms display. Donna cites Chanel’s classic elegance as her number-one influence, with other inspirations including the Pompidou Centre and the French countryside aesthetic. To see how these concepts come together, be sure to check out Beautiful Blooms at the Flower Show next March.

Modern Enchanted Garden-(Part 3)

Here is our third installation of the Modern Enchanted Garden Wedding for 600. Today’s post will walk you through the lobby which included a work of art entrance piece, a multi dimensional place card table and a unique entrance way. All photos were taken by Roger Dong Photography.

As the guests entered the lobby of the Double Tree Hotel in Tarrytown they were greeted by this tall ” work of art” piece. This unique display of moss balls, emerald green crystals and plum calla lilies really caught the eye of all the guests.

For the place card table we created a whole unique display.  Against the window we placed a screen filled with test tubes and greenery. Then in front of that we layered on our custom gold table where a tall grid of gold bamboo was created and accented with the plum callas.  I had mentioned before that this whole wedding really worked around one flower-the calla lily.  You will begin to see it in all the designs.

Here’s an overall view of the display.  We had two hedges placed on either side of our gold table. We placed glass on top of them and laid out the place cards on the table tops. Behind the hedges we had two candle holders with plum pillar candles. I love the shadows the bamboo created on the floor.

The hedges were so fun and worked great into our Modern Enchanted Garden wedding.  The place cards were designed from gold metal. We worked with Two Paper Dolls to create them and just days before found these great plexi cubes to display them in. We were using a lot of metal and gold elements in the mix so the metal place cards worked into the look beautifully.

As the guests passed the place card display they then entered the Cocktail Hour through these large doors. We created a dripping display above the doors to highlight the entrance way.

Modern Enchanted Garden-(Part 2)

In the last blog post you saw the amazing bridal bouquet and bridesmaids bouquets that were created by our designers!   Today I am going to show you the rest of the personal flowers which were equally unique and beautiful.  Beautiful Blooms has an amazing group of people that work together as a team to design and create beautiful designs whether modern or traditional. When you book with Beautiful Blooms you can count on creative designs and superb quality flowers. All photos were taken by Roger Dong Photography.

In keeping with the Modern Enchanted Garden we designed a variety of personal flowers…

The ring bearer carried this lovely moss pillow accented with shades of green ribbon, dianthus and of course emerald green crystals. Where ever we could add them we did. Faux rings were tied onto it this pillow and the Best Man always holds the real rings.

The groomsmen wore these simple mini calla lily boutonnieres which were finished off with a green ribbon and an emerald green crystal accent. Simple and chic!

Modern Enchanted Garden- (Part 1)

Last month, a previously client (see the red and black mitzvah photos on our website) asked us to design her daughter’s wedding. The only parameters we were given…. the couple and the bride’s mom wanted a modern enchanted garden feel in shades of green (emerald green was the color for the bridesmaids and moms) so that color played a large part in the wedding.

After visiting the facility, The Double Tree Tarrytown, we knew all the spots that needed decor. We had a guest count of over 600 guests and 2 months to design the whole wedding so with the list of events happening throughout the day (below) it was time for us to start designing.

In today’s post I am highlighting the bridal flowers. I love that the bride and her mom were so open to us being creative. They wanted unusual and unique and still beautiful.

I love the bouquet! It was a modern cascade of gold wire, emerald green chandelier crystals, hanging amaryanthus, plum callas, mini allium, dianthus, scabiosa pods and these beautiful freeze dried emerald green roses. The bride and her mom LOVED LOVED it!

Beautiful Blooms

When we worked on the color palette for this wedding we decided that the plum and purple along with gold would all work beautifully together. The calla lily became the main flower in the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. It was the first time we really focused on one specific flower and it made a strong statement. Stay tuned for those photos.

The underside of the bouquet was all covered in gaylax leaves and finished off with emerald green ribbon and crystals.

The bridesmaids wore emerald green dresses with a bold pattern in shades of green. We choose to do a white bouquet for the girls and each one was slightly different. This one shown here was created from peonies, agapanthus, calla lilies, bouvardia and green fiddleheads. I love fiddleheads so I was excited that the client was good with us using them as some clients don’t like them but we really felt that they worked.

We wrapped the bouquet handle with ribbon and ribbon strands with emerald green hanging crystals. These little details really make all the difference.

In Part 2, I’ll show you the rest of the personals as we really created some unique designs.

Under the Sea Mitzvah “Film”

Please enjoy the “Film” by CinemaCake Filmmakers

Under the Sea Mitzvah

I am slowly getting caught up showcasing all of the work we have done this year and am excited to show photos from this Under the Sea Mitzvah we did back in March.  All of the photos shown here were taken by Paula Cella Photography. We worked alongside  Tara from EBE on this event as the client was a family member of one of the key players at EBE.

This was a really fun event for us to design as our client’s son loved to scuba dive and loved anything to do with the ocean and fish. When we worked with the client we decided on a color palette of deep navy and black with accents of shades of blue and green (plants). This event was fun to design as it incorporated no florals but instead we worked with a unique window pane “aquariums”, shells, fish and water plants.

ben_tiger_0281

There was not assigned seating for this event so even though we did not have a need for a place card table we designed a cool coordinating entrance way piece for the ballroom.  This display gave the illusion that the cylinder vases were going right through the table.  The cylinders placed under the plexi and metal table that we provided were filled with sand and shells at different levels.

ben_tiger_0282

The cylinders on the top of the table are filled with shells, pond plants and even gold fish. I usually am very against using live fish in arrangements as they do have a tendency not to survive an event.  Since the client really wanted them we did agree to using them only on the place card table and one of our breakdown people is now the owner of several goldfish!  The base of these arrangements were accented with sand, shells and these cool sea urchins.

ben_tiger_0382

ben_tiger_0283

The reflection of the candles agains the glass was very beautiful and softened the whole look.

The guests then entered the ballroom where we created a whole lounge/cocktail reception feel in shades of blues, navy and black.  We did a combination of couches and coffee tables, hi tops, low tables and some raised bar tables.  I absolutely love the navy velvet couches they just added depth to the room and the fabric was very oceany.

ben_tiger_0355

The truss systems was decorated with netting and shells to add some additional ocean texture to the modern truss.

ben_tiger_0352

ben_tiger_0349

This long low plate glass vase incorporated gravel, sand, shells and floating candles and was placed on the coffee tables.

ben_tiger_0363

The candlelight really looked amazing against the deep navy and added depth to the room.  As you can see from all the photos here, Beautiful Blooms is more than a floral design company we are a decor company and create designs that are original and tasteful no matter what event we are creating.

ben_tiger_0350

These tables had a trio of plate glass vases which were created to look like mini aquariums with gravel and pond plants.

These tall communal tables were provided by the facility so we added additional aquarium decor to them too. We brought in hi bar stools in black with deep navy cushions.

This was a really fun event for all of us to create! Enjoy the photos.

CinemaCake (a filmmaking company) created the film for this Mitzvah.

Good Dog Gala/Bad Dog Ball

So most people know that I am an animal lover and whenever I can I like to support animal causes.   TJ, my 130 lb Bernese Mountain Dog, has been a cover model for cards sold at the Beautiful Blooms Boutique as well as a our mascot at the Design Studio. He is quite a ham as you can in this photo taken by Marie Labbancz at our Design Studio.

tj

I am also lucky enough to now have Abbie (a gorgeous labradoodle in my life as well as Freeze a handsome horse)!  Sometime soon I’ll have photos to show you these new additions.

This year, I am excited for Beautiful Blooms to be a part of the Good Dog Gala/Bad Dog Ball that will be held at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia.  I hope you can all come out and have fun and support the great work that the SPCA does throughout Philadelphia.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Composting

Beautiful Blooms Boutique is proud to be a part of a local composting program with Bennett Compost. This has been a successful transition for us these past six months and we look forward to moving the program forward into the future.  We are pleased to be working with a local small business that cares about the environment as much as we do.  Everyday we try to think of ways to make our footprint smaller on society.

bennett_business_0810_500pxwide

Here’s some company background info about Bennett Compost so you can learn more about who they are and how they got started.

A Rochester native, Tim Bennett moved to Philadelphia 10 years ago to attend Temple University. He was living in an apartment at the time and really wanted to compost, but he didn’t quite know how. One thing he did know was that he didn’t want to spend $300 for a fancy composter.

Years later, as an employee at Temple’s Small Business Development Center, a resource for budding entrepreneurs, Tim was surrounded by people starting businesses. Around the same time, he went to dinner with his fiancé and some friends. One companion spent a portion of the evening insisting that the city collect compost. It was a light bulb moment—Tim realized he wasn’t alone.

Bennett Compost was born. Tim started signing up clients, and collecting organic material from residences and businesses. Through partnerships with community gardens and commercial composters, that waste is turned into something valuable, compost. Bennett Compost builds the bins at gardens around the city, providing compost for Philadelphia’s urban growers. Extra compost is made available to Bennett Compost customers.

Through this simple idea, Bennett Compost is reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills—many clients cut their trash output in half. Organic material that does end up in landfills breaks down, releasing methane, a greenhouse, making composting an incredibly powerful tool for reducing global warming.

Need another reason to sign up today? By hauling some of the heaviest trash, Bennett Compost even saves the city a little bit of moneyand we all know they can use it!
